Video: Trudging through Turbulence

My extra-credit video is titled Trudging through Turbulence. My idea was that we walk through so much noise everyday and don’t realize it or pay attention to it. I set the pace of this video with my walk and the sound the leaves made when they crunched under my feet.  I “walk” through different places and scenes. Each scene has its own unique sounds. There are people talking in some scenes, music and interesting noises in others. Sometimes it is only chaos, but if we stop and pay attention to the background noise we never know what we may hear.

Human Movement: Finished Project

My finished project turned out different than what I proposed. This was because it would have been difficult for me to get video recording of the inside of human bodies. Instead, I took video of kids I work with and friends in my classes. I video taped everywhere I went, including a hibachi restaurant.

I made my video into a narrative. My narrative is about a student being distracted by the internet. She opens up her laptop in class and watches videos. The videos she watches are long and mundane and jump around. She is sucked in. It feels like minutes to her but when she realizes that she has actually been watching for hours, she wonderes where the time went. I know I can relate to this. Things on the screen kept moving and held her interest, useing  up her precious time.

For this project I started and ended with a student at her laptop. I also used the same sound in the beginning as in the end. Scenes/shots in-between are the videos she watched. I used background music from the Kent State University Orchestra. I took the audio at a recent concert with their permission. In the video of the boy playing with the soccer ball there is a popular pop song that was not royalty free so I chose to use the orchestra music instead. I added sureal effects  to the video adding interest, eerieness and adding to the narrative. I tried matching up songs and some voice where needed. I thought this video came together despite random recordings.

Postcard Finale

I got my postcard back from a friend in Cincinnati. I was really surprised with her take on interacting with my postcard. I was expecting the recipient to use physical objects from nature to interact with my postcard. Instead, I got my postcard back with clips of text taped onto it. My entire postcard is covered in text except for some greenery poking through on the front. All of the text was about God and creationism. Some of the text did mention nature, “Every summer, the rich and vibrant greens of the forest canopy delight our eyes. But did you know that all the while, these leaves are hiding something they won’t reveal until fall?”. I am surprised by all the text, as a visual person I have to read everything twice to try to comprehend it. The back reads “A message to big to ignore” in all capitals. I see where she tried to tie it in with nature, with the quote, “The Image of God: Its Nature” also in all capitals. “Truth everyone can see” is also bold and in all capital letters. The text mentions animals such as dinosaurs. It also says “While our human eyes may in some ways seem inferior to the eyes of birds, we may be sure that God has given us eyes perfectly suited to our own unique needs. ” I think that so much text is a bit much. She could have used images of nature to make her point as well and not bombard the postcard with text. I said to incorporate nature and add a personal touch. I definitely see the personal touch. In a way I am actually glad that the interaction with this postcard surprised me. I would have loved to see art and nature used but this is proof that everyone thinks differently. Some people use text to express their ideas and some people use visual art, some use music, etc. The layout was artistic in the way the text was set up.

I made my postcard have the theme of nature. Nature offers us so much and I think that the recipient can use nature to interact with my postcard in a variety of ways. For example, they can poke holes in it with sticks, stain it with mud or berry juice, or get it wet with water. They can even glue objects from nature onto it such as flowers, twigs or leaves. With nature options are endless. I can’t wait to see how my recipient interprets this and interacts with this postcard!

Self Portrait {Final Project}

Petrulis_self-portrait_72My self portrait reflects me. I really like nature and I have grown up spending a lot of time outside. For this project we used Photoshop to create a self portrait collage. I did stray away from my original idea of making a self portrait of my heart and not of my likeness. Instead, I wanted to show the little me and me now incorporated into nature. I am still the little me but changed by life and what I have learned over the years growing up. I made my face’s opacity low to allow the nature background to show through. To me nature is beautiful and nature is showing through me, enhancing me. I hope to allow the beauty of what I have learned through life and nature to shine through me always.

In Class Video Assignment

This project was interesting because I swapped videos with a classmate. They got my videos and I had to use theirs, which was a surprise to me. This is based on the Surrealists practice used in the early 20th century called “Exquisite corpse”.  One artist starts the work and another takes it over, usually not collaborating at all during production. In this way it is interesting to see how the second artist finishes it and if it resembles what the first artist intended at all. I used the videos I was provided and created a mash-up using the sounds in the videos to go together and add interest. I wanted it to sound like the sounds flowed somehow. I used transitions and tried to begin one where the previous one stopped in a creative way.  The sounds also function as audio cues used to pace the video. I used editing effects such as speeding up, reverse and slowing down, etc. I used titles and credits as well. I wanted this video to be a ‘collage’ of sounds and the video used to illustrate. In this way, sound is the star and video is just to illustrate.
